The No That Led to the Finish Line

Bukunmi A. 9TH GRADE

A time when I didn't get what I wanted was when I tried out for my high school volleyball team in the summer of 7th grade, and didn't make it. I was pretty sad but also not that surprised because the coaches always have the same people on the team every year or people who looked the same and I didn't look like the people on the team. This disappointment led me towards something better which was track.

I had already done track my 6th and 7th year of middle school but I wasn't very good. I made it my goal to make it to divisionals and counties my eighth grade year. I redirected my focus into track and put all of my focus into it to get better. One month before track tryouts I trained consistently in my backyard doing track drills and exercising, and also prayed and prayed.

Then the day of tryouts came and I PR'd in the 100 and got 14.3. I kinda already expected to make the team because I had already been on the track team the previous years, like I mentioned before, but I still wanted to try my hardest and put all my effort into it. Then I made the team! I was so happy and excited, and my friend made it too.

Every day of practice leading up to divisionals I put in so much work during practice and PR'd multiples during the regular season, and qualified for divisionals in the 100, 200, 4x1 and triple jump. There were definitely a lot of challenges throughout the regular season, especially for triple jump but I overcame it through prayer and help by God. After divisionals were counties and I qualified for counties in the 200, 4x1, and triple jump. During counties I got 11th in the 200, 5th in the 4x1, and second in triple jump.

At the very end of the track season I got my girls school record for the 200 with a 28.33 and also the 4x1 record. It was such an amazing season and I am so glad I accomplished all of my goals and put in the work to achieve them. I give God all of the glory because none of this could have happened without Him. Thank you for listening to my story!
